Bit of an update as it's been a while since the last post. Well the iPad still isn't out and there isn't even a date set yet. But I'm convinced more and more that it's going to be awesome.

Been a fair bit of snow this year which has been great. Proper stuff. Some excellent sledding over the woods. Even had a snowfall at Center Parcs last weekend which was very pretty.

Work steady and there's a new prospect of more work on the site. Still hoping for some time gaps to enable development of my own projects.

Creativity is the same multi-headed beast that torments me as always. So much stuff that I want to do and the time just rushes by. Focus is the problem. I'm really trying hard to focus on my focus.

iPad

So at last Apple announced the iPad. I'd been seriously hyped-up for this device and was expecting surprising and magical things from it. And to be honest my first reaction following the keynote was one of slight disappointment as I realised that it's 'just a big iPod Touch'. But, the more I've thought about it, and I can't stop thinking about it, the more excited I'm getting as it sinks in what a revolutionary step this might be in the evolution of the personal computing world.

The haters have been very vocal, and the more noise they have made, the funnier it seems as they just don't get it. There are some right clever idiots out there!

I've always hated the fact that every man and his dog owned a computer.

The PC industry conned consumers into thinking that these computers were friendly devices that would enhance their lives. I hated it because these computers just brought grief to the lives of these people.

These poor souls weren't interested in computers as objects in themselves like it was some sort of hobby. They just wanted a computer so they could do stuff like get on the internet or look at their photos. But things would go wrong with these friendly computers and very often I'd be consulted, roped-in, or worse, just handed a machine and be asked to sort it out. Well now, this could be a thing of the past. The appliance computer has finally arrived. Now computers can return to being the reserve of the professional and the hobbyist. Just like it used to be.

Fraser Speirs gets it,

What you're seeing in the industry's reaction to the iPad is nothing less than future shock.

Gruber gets it too,

Manual computers, like the Mac and Windows PCs, will slowly shift from the standard to the niche, something of interest only to experts and enthusiasts and developers.

I've felt no particular urge to try and document the past weeks activities but a few observations may be worth a shot.

My main feeling of contentment derived from this extended break from work relates a lot to being present in the moment. I've spent the summer day by day, observing each hour pass. Sometimes I did stuff, sometimes I did nothing. It was all the same. It was simply life and I enjoyed simply living. Of course, spending this precious time with my family made the sensation even sweeter.

My mindfulness practice has not been as formal as it could have been, but I reckon I've managed to apply the overall principles to good effect in my days. I've not spent much time sitting, but many moments during this summer were observed and I really feel that I've been present in my life. And that's a very satisfying feeling when stopping to consider things.

Recent tweets I've read have referred to contractors similar to myself but with many investments and I strongly feel that my recent investment in the present moment is FAR more valuable than any financial plan.

Welcome

Welcome to the Tingy blog.
